SOLOMON Islands most prolific footballer Henry Fa’arodo has turned his sight to beach soccer.
He is the latest player to be drafted into the Bilikiki National Beach Soccer training squad in preparation for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, later this year.
Fa’arodo’s inclusion has added colour and flavour to the Oceania Beach Kings.
His inclusion will certainly spark excitement, as local fans will want to witness how the sensation outdoor midfielder will perform on the beach.
The national men’s Beach Soccer team had begun their final preparations for 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Dubai this 16-22 November.
According to the Team Manager Rueben Oimae, this week marks the start of an intensive training aimed at taking the team one step further than previously, into the knockout stages at the World Cup.
Reports from Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Media Office said this week, the team will have daily training sessions to help the players sharpen their skills for the ultimate competition in this form of the ‘beautiful game.

The team is also aiming to go into camp, which will be dedicated to nothing other than group training, every two weeks.
“The training camps will help the players to develop a bond that will be essential in maintaining morale when the team is far away from the home and loved ones.
“Regular gym sessions are also planned to condition and strengthen the players,” SIFF Media said.
Oimae stressed that a full and intense preparation is vital if the Bilikikis are to improve in this year’s world competition.
The manager hinted that unconfirmed fixtures of friendly warm-up matches are currently have been arranged.
He added the team is expected to meet with the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) officials in Auckland to discuss how OFC can assist the team in its preparations.
“These (potential) matches will help the team to identify weaknesses and strengthen them before the actual tournament,” he said.
Solomon Islands qualified for the 2009 Beach Soccer World Cup after beating Vanuatu 1-0 in the final of the OFC World Cup Qualifiers on Moorea Island in Tahiti last month.
It is the fourth year in a row Bilikiki will represent Oceania at the Beach Soccer World Cup.
Bilikiki’s opponents in the World Cup group stages will be decided after the official tournament draws in Dubai today.

Roy raises roar
BABASIGA cult hero Roy Krishna believes the Lions can roar to victory in this weekend's Inkk Battle of the Giants.
With the expectation of thousands of fans weighing heavily on his shoulders to pull a victory out of thin air, the goal-scoring machine said it can happen with unity of mind and spirit.
Before a jam-packed 7000-plus Labasa crowd at Subrail Park, Krishna tantalised his followers with deft skills before rocketing home a penalty to give Labasa a 1-0 lead against Suva in their Giants opener.
He then promised fans more must come if Labasa is to be crowned Giants on Sunday.
With Esava Naqeleca firing in the equaliser, Krishna said after it was now up to him and fellow Waitakere star Benjamin Totori to lead the young side.
"I salute my team mates for giving all even though they are young," he said.
"Not having a coach should not affect our performance because the team is contributing their views on possible game plans. We don't have the experience but it's the knowledge that counts," he said.
He said they kept it simple against the more experienced Suva side.
"We didn't have an experienced backline so we didn't want to confuse our defenders.
"We just played a sweeper, two centre backs, outer backs, central midfielder and striker."
Totori and Krishna said they struggled with the stark change from the winter of New Zealand to the hot Labasa sun.
"Yes, it is hot compared to the cold we came in from two days ago but we should acclimatise as tournament progresses," Totori said.
"When I came in yesterday they told me it was a young side but today I'm happy with their performance."
"To win we will just have to work hard, put our heads together and see what each game brings."
Krishna said ground conditions proved quite a challenge against Suva.
"Lautoka should have better ground conditions so we are looking forward to the next game."

Stars return to boost Mala Cup
HONIARA based players have featured for their teams in the opening matches of the Championship and are expected make an impact with their vast experience in competitive football.
Malaita Football Association (MFA) have revealed that all participating constituencies in the Malaita Cup are allowed to include four Honiara based played players with 18 home based players.
Among the prominent names in Honiara football currently playing in the Malaita Cup is national mid fielder Henry Fa’arodo Junior who joined East Kware’ae for the Malaita Cup.
Fa’arodo helped East Kware’ae to a 5-1 win over Lau Baelelea in their opening match on Monday.
Koloale captain Richard Anisua have also joined Northern Lions and scored a goal in their 3-1 win in their opening match.
Other Honiara players participating in the Malaita Cup are Timothy Joe who plays for Auki Langalanga, Presley Futa (Central Kware’ae), Nelson Sale (Baegu/Asifola), Derrick Taebo, Ezra Sale, Mostyn Sanga.
Reports reaching star sports in Auki over the weekend suggested that Bilikiki captain James Naka will be featuring for West Kwara’ae in the Malaita Cup.
James Naka last week led the Bilikiki to Qualifier for the third Beach Soccer World Cup. The team is due to arrive in the country today and Naka is expected to join the Nick Lamani coached side after this arrival.
Naka is also been tipped to a return to Fijian club Navua for the Battle of the Giants which starts this week and reports a still sketchy whether the beach soccer captain will play in the Malaita Cup.
The Malaita Cup continues through this week and will reach its final stages next week with the grand final to be played during the province’s second appointed day celebrations.

Students fear swine flue in Fiji
SOLOMON Islands students studying in Fiji want to return home for fear of contracting the influenza A (H1N1) or swine flu virus.
And they are calling on the national government and responsible authorities to make necessary arrangement for their return to Solomon Islands.
Rockinson Faga, a student at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, said with the increasing number of swine flu cases in Fiji, they feared being infected.
“We are worried about the situation because our lives are in danger as the infection continues to increase here.
“We want the government and health authorities (in SI) to take our request seriously because it would be a burden for the country if we are infected.
“For the next few months, probably some of us will likely to be infected due to the current weather here,” he claimed in an email to Solomon Star yesterday.
Fiji’s confirmed number of pandemic H1N1 2009 cases has now risen to 10 - three of whom are children under the age of eight.
Fiji Times Online reported last weekend that of the latest 15 samples collected and tested, four people have the potentially deadly strain.
Mr Faga said it would be a disaster for the country if the returning students and their families are all infected and tested positive with the virus.
The government must act quickly to transport us back home, he said.
“Please responsible authorities, do something as our lives are at risk.
“We are being pushed out of the campus, which is more susceptible to the disease,” he said.
Moving out of campus, he said, would put them in a situation susceptible to the infection.
Mr Faga said the university administration had request all students to vacate the campus for the youth festival.
He said most students, including those from Vanuatu, have returned to their respective countries.
Solomon Star could not reach responsible government authorities for comment last night.
