Guale peace committee meets this week

THE Guadalcanal Province Peace Building and Reconciliation Committee second meeting has been rescheduled for this month. A statement from the Ministry of National Peace and Reconciliation said the Peace Building and Reconciliation Committee is an important Committee with a mandate to plan the reconciliation and peace process in Guadalcanal which will be facilitated by Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace in partnership with the Guadalcanal Provincial Government.“Members of the Committee comprises leaders of various community-based organizations representing chiefs, church leaders, ex-combatants, youths, women and other prominent leaders within the Province,” the statement said.The Guadalcanal Province Peace Building Committee in recognition of the important roles of women in peace building has four women representatives in the Committee.The meeting is aimed at discussing and putting together a peace and reconciliation program activities for 2009 which should see reconciliations of the different parties to the recent ethnic tension in Guadalcanal reconciling with each other.This should lead to an inter-provincial reconciliation after which should then lead on to a national reconciliation. Two main agendas of discussions during this upcoming meeting will be:
To plan the 2009 Intra-reconciliation programs for Guadalcanal Province.
To draw up the Guadalcanal Province Reconciliations framework.With regards to Intra-reconciliation Program for 2009, the statement said the Committee will be discussing major inter-provincial reconciliation issues such as the Constituency Reconciliation programs, reconciliations between various former militia groups and civilians’ supporters and victims, Marau Island communities and Guadalcanal Provincial Government and people and reconciliations between Guadalcanal Provincial Government and Solomon Islands Government [RASI] and with the other provinces.
