Honiara Beautification condemns cutting down of palm trees

DESPITE efforts of the Honiara Beautification Committee to beautify the Honiara city some members of the public seem not to appreciate such great work.

Over the weekend more than ten royal palm trees planted between Panatina Plaza and the Ministry of fisheries along the Prince Philip Highway has been brutally chopped down.

The palm trees were planted by the beautification committee four years ago.

Chairperson of the Honiara Beautification committee Keithie Saunders has expressed disappointment over such action.

“What are these people trying to do? We have spent so much time and effort trying to beautify the city and it is very disheartening to see this kind of attitude.

"We are a charity organization. We get no support from the government and the city council. We are trying to get donors to give us money for our work.

"I have spent 11years trying to organize work to beautify the city. Iam doing this as a volunteer. I don’t get paid for it. I’ve spent thousand of hours doing this," she said.

Everything the beautification committee has done is free because we are trying to make the city of Honiara look good.

And it is very disheartening to see this happen.

"What do the people of Honiara want? Do they want a nice Honiara or a Honiara with chopped down trees?" she said.

The Honiara Beautification committee has been beautifying parks, roundabouts, and the streets of Honiara.
